“I hear there was some stiff competition, but you were the last doula standing…” he said with a laugh.
It’s always a great feeling to be chosen.
I believe I was the first of many doulas who were interviewing with this couple. I always encourage expectant parents who meet with me to interview other doulas if possible. I suggest this even if it is someone who I would love to work with. One of the most important thing to me is that they feel a great connection with who they've selected. This is such an intimate, once in a lifetime event that you want to feel uninhibited, safe and supported. It is truly a gift for women to feel that and they will not forget it.
Although I have had some great connections with families, I am sometimes not hired. I will never know why since few people bother to follow-up, let alone offer a reason. I am okay with this now, believing that who I am supposed to support during this time will not only find me but that there will be a mutual desire to work together.
